Insight Oriented Marital & Group Therapies

With regards to individual therapy, I develop a clear and thorough understanding of problems and then apply the most appropriate techniques for each contributing factor. The cause of problems should not be over-simplified and circumstantial factors need to be considered. I use techniques that have a scientific and ethical basis. I will not just sit and listen.

I prefer to work with people who are either not using medications or who are interested in stopping medications. However, I do recognize and respect the usefulness of medications for certain problems. After the assessment is completed, please expect me to be direct and interactive.

With regards to couples and marital therapy, couple therapy is very structured and methodical. I do not let couples yell in sessions. Problems are identified and the nature of the problems are clearly understood and agreed to by each spouse before interventions are suggested or tried.

With regards to child behavior problems, including ADHD and especially "Bipolar disorder," I never assume that your child has been accurately diagnosed. I will conduct my own thorough assessment and make recommendations from there. Please understand that diagnostic labels are just labels; they do not explain the cause of the your child's problems. There is no such things as a chemical imbalance. Child behavior can be confusing and complicated, but there are good techniques that work for nearly all their behavior problems.

For all clients, please expect to be asked to make behavior changes, either additions or subtractions from your life in order to reach your goals. Talking and reading about problems may provide more insight, but at some point behavior changes are a must for success. I will educate you regarding the change process, help you develop specific plans to change, and provide you with techniques to use along the way. I do my best to make sure you are comfortable and supported.
