Why Should I consider doing a consultation first?
Choosing the right therapist is something to take very seriously. Think about it, why spend 3-4 hours over the course of a month with a therapist only to find that they’re not a “good fit.” We recommend that people meet at least two different therapists prior to starting therapy.
People often have ideas about the therapist they would like based on gender, degree, or age, but studies show that these three issues matter the least to people after they have been through therapy. Getting out of your comfort zone may be part of the solution. Recently, Consumer Reports interviewed hundreds of consumers and found that the type of degree that the therapist had mattered very little – that is, consumers were equally happy with Social Workers, Psychologists and Psychiatrists (who provided therapy). They also found that therapy worked just as well as medication in the short term, and it seems to work better in the long term.
